| 値 | Purpose: to reveal the details of communication strategies with patients used by nurses with experience in caring for foreign patients. Method: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 19 nurses who have experience in caring for foreign patients. The data obtained in these interviews was qualitatively analyzed using a content analysis approach from B. Berison(1957). Results: 2 core categories, 5 categories, and 29 subcategories were extracted as communication strategies used by nurses. The core category of “understanding the cultural diversity of foreign patients" was generated from the categories of“cultural diversity of foreign patients” and “understanding the cultural backgrounds of foreign patients.” The core category of “using resources to better relate to foreign patients” was generated from the “leveraging physical and human resources,” “verbal and nonverbal communication with foreign patients,” and “ideas for providing better care to foreign patients” categories. Conclusion: It was shown that nurses who “understand the cultural diversity of foreign patients” take care of those patients with ideas for “leveraging resources to relate to foreign patients.” This finding suggests the need to modify nursing education to incorporate communication strategies that help nurses to understand the culture of foreign patients and use various physical and human resources. |
