値 Purpose: The purpose of this study is to elucidate the unique characteristics of the occupational stress experienced by nurses working in psychiatric emergency hospitals. Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 nurses (7 men and 3 women) who worked in hospital psychiatric emergency wards. The data were analyzed using qualitative and inductive methods. In order to supplement the data from the interviews, we also conducted prior observations of the types of occupational stress that the nurses experienced while engaged in nursing duties. This study was conducted with the approval of the Shiga Medical School Institutional Review Board. Results: Based on our analysis of the interviews, we identified 7 items in the upper category, 18 in middle category, and 80 in the lower category. The average duration of the interviews was 57 minutes (maximum, 65 minutes; minimum, 49 minutes). Conclusion: The occupational stress in nurses in the hospital psychiatric emergency wards included that due to violence and suicide committed by their patients, as well as exposure to the unique environment of a psychiatric emergency ward. Due to problems and difficulties that arose from the psychiatric emergency care system, nurses experienced conflict and uncertainly with respect to their role, doubts pertaining to professional ethics, and other stresses of a similar nature. These various factors were entangled in complicated ways, resulting in unique types of occupational stress that are felt by nursing staff in hospital psychiatric emergency wards.
